"When you auditioned Hailey, at the age of 8, to be your student you said, "I have to have her!" Well Clark, she feels the same way about you-- The 40 minute drive, each way, is worth it to continue with your excellent teaching. How many private instructors guided a 15 year old freshman to a State Championship? You are amazing! Thank-you so much."

I know Clark to be a great teacher because next year he will have been my teacher for half of my life! Music is incredibly important to me. In order to acheive in music I would have to have an awesome teacher. I do! He has took me from me squeeking on a clarinet to the state solo champion on the bari sax. Now i dont mean to brag, but i think that's pretty cool, especially as a freshman! Thanks for everything Clark!

I just wanted to tell you how much I / everyone absolutely loved your band and all the songs you played were amazing !! I have wanted to see you perform for years and finally was honored to be able to experience how entertaining you were to all that gathered. My hubby and I will be seeing you again soon . Thank you for making the reunion the best one yet !! You all set the pace the moment you started playing and kept it going all night . Haven’t danced like that in years and everyone just stayed on the dance floor, knowing another great song was coming. All of us danced, sang and when I looked around everyone was smiling non stop !! Again, I can’t thank you enough for providing us all with the ability to forget all the bad in the world right now and focus on nothing but having an absolutely incredible evening. Take care and keep doing what you do . You’re all so talented and a treat to see perform! 😊😊😊”

Clark, your presence and musical gift is such a joy to me and the whole family at TLR. We love you!

It is my pleasure to recommend Clark Bondy as an educator. Being an educator myself, I realize the fine balance it takes to be "cool" and effective when teaching children. I believe Clark has found such balance. The kids think he's cool, while the parents are thankful for his hard work. It is Clark's rare insight and dedication that sets him apart from other instructors. For example, no other instructor (that we have found) puts on a performance each term. This is so important to the kids as it allows them to show off for parents, siblings, grandparents etc and teaches them what a finished product is. At recitals, students get a chance to meet other kids who chose music over sports. Music programs have taken a hard hit in the school system these days, so for many kids Clark's recitals are the only chance they get to belong to a winning team.
Clark is articulate in his teaching and motivational techniques. He takes a personal vested interest in every student, so that each gets exactly what they need to grow as a musician, but more importantly as a member of society. My daughter Ali met Clark while involved in Whiskey Hill Jazz Club, attended summer jazz clinics, then became a private student. Under his instruction, she placed in many solo contests, traveled to all state, and Western International Band Clinic, all in her second year of high school.
Although her musical accomplishments were great while studying with Clark, as a parent I was most excited about her increased confidence level that spilled over into the rest of her studies, and general self image. With this new found confidence Ali decided to go to community college at age 15, to finish high school early. Much to our amazement, she became a music scholarship recipient and was invited to play in the Mt. Hood Community College Jazz Band, before graduating from high school. She has since, received scholarship offers from various four year institutions as a result."
Thank you so much Clark. You have made a insurmountable difference in our lives.

My wife and I have worked with Clark Bondy for over 9 years with the Whiskey Hill Jazz Club in Canby. The Jazz Club was founded because the Canby schools had no jazz program as part of their music curriculum. It was for Middle School students, and was entirely run by parent volunteers. We were very active in this organization, serving as president as well as on the board of directors. During our entire involvement, Clark Bondy was our music director. He not only taught music quite well, he was a very special person to the kids in the band. He made learning music fun. Every year, we started with a lot of novices, many of who had not played jazz, or any complex music, before. So, of course, even though we had some returning talent, the band was always a little ragged. But, in a month or two, they sounded like they had been playing together for a few years at least. And the kids were having a great time while they were learning and getting better. They liked the whole experience, this was not a do it because your parents want you to situation. The musicians liked to come to practice.
Clark was always very dedicated to his students. In one case we remember well, the parents of one of our musicians had been through a messy divorce. The student was living with his mother, who did not have money to pay dues. Clark pushed hard for a waiver because he felt that, in a time that was difficult for the student, he needed music as a stabilizing influence in his life. This is typical of Clarks attitude and dedication to his students.
All this is not to distract from the quality of Clarks instruction. Whiskey Hill was a consistent first place winner at Middle School level jazz festivals, both in the band category and soloist awards. And there were lots of soloists, not just a few talented kids. Clark has a great talent to motivate students to push themselves, reach up, and take on complicated solos. And win a lot of awards.
Clark taught one of our sons, Scott, on saxophone for several years of private lessons. During that time, he improved greatly. He has since gone on to play in the University of Washington top jazz band and a professional rock band. We attribute much of this to Clarks instruction. He took Scott from a good to a very good musician, and taught a lot of technique that has served Scott very well.
Our other son was quiet and not very outgoing. Clark gave him confidence in not only his music, but personally as well. This son has gone on to graduate from college with a degree in Multimedia, using his background and love of music to compose his own music and sound for his animated graphics.
In addition, we have always found Clark to have the highest standards of integrity, professionalism, and musicianship. We highly recommend him for any position that requires a great teacher and musician plus a dedication to his students.

Mr Bondy,
I still take lessons in classical music because its a conservatory, but I feel that it enhances my abilities more then just straight jazz playing because of the etudes and scales (tell your students that scales are very important and they do mean something in the future lol). the Prof for sax wishes to thank you also for your instruction prior to me coming to Pacific, because he is thrilled that I am so versatile in being able to switch from jazz to classical and back again and not have inflections or certain styling influences drift from one to the other. I am really glad that i was able to obtain this from your teachings, and i want to thank you for that. all those lessons of switching classical and then to jazz playing really have paid off in the long run.
Thanks again, and if you need a player for like a whjc gig or something like that in the Christmas season I will be home again Dec.

First Jazz 2008, presented by The Jazz Society of Oregon took place in two venues on April 5th, 2008. The afternoon session took place at Jimmy Mak’s one of Portland’s top notch jazz showcases. The afternoon began with a performance by the Whiskey Hill Jazz Club, a middle and high school jazz band based in Canby, OR, under the able direction of Clark H. Bondy who has squired this band for the last 15 years. This exuberant group of teenagers was well coached and produced a solid ensemble big band sound that swelled the chests of many of the parents present in the audience. All in attendance could feel that the future of jazz is assured in the hands of these musically talented and dedicated youth.
The Whiskey Hill band kicked off with “Honey Suckle Rose” and followed with solid renditions of “Sweet Georgia Brown,” “Birth of the Band” by Quincy Jones and a Latin tune entitled “You Likea Da Juice” which spiced up the menu with South of the border salsa. Duke Ellington’s “In a Sentimental Mood” was nicely rendered as was the up tempo tune “Groove Dot Com” which was followed by a smooth rendition of “Swing, Swing, Swing” by John Williams. The well known “Caravan” and the oft played “Pick up the Pieces” was joined by the humorous “Hog Squealing, Belly Aching Blues” which left the audience smiling and rump rolling. Numerous solos revealed the depth and breadth of talent in this band which provided a tasty hors d’oeuvre for the main event which followed their performance.

"I wanted to send a special "Thank You" for the work you have been doing with Joshua. I don't know if he told you but he was invited to compete at the State solo contest.
Last year Joshua came to me and said he needed lessons to get better. That the band students that are good all get lessons outside of school. In the 5+ months you have been working with him, he has greatly improved with his playing, but also his love and drive to be a better musician. He looks forward to his lessons with you. So for giving your time and talent to helping kids to play and love music, Thank You. We appreciate all that you do.
You did extremely well working with the new students last night. Your enthusiasm showed and it was obvious that the kids were paying attention and learning a lot in your care - well done! I am not surprised given your many years of teaching experience"

I honestly think that David would not have continued to play the saxophone if we had not been lucky enough to engage Mr. Bondy as his teacher, when he was in 8th grade. As it is, he earned 3rd in state in Alto Sax in HS, 2 years of 1/2 tuition at OSU for a music minor, and continues to play professionally in a punk rock/jazz group, a funk group, and a jazz combo.
Clark was able to see past the rebellious teen to the sensitive musician, inspire him to get control of his life and music practice, and show him a window into the possible by introducing him to recordings of great musicians. Each year in September I groaned inwardly at the selection of yet another solo contest piece I thought to be impossible for him to play. Yet by each April, the challenge had motivated my son to improve by leaps and bounds. I finally realized that your concern was not simply the perfection of performance, but the chance for the student to learn by stretching to the utmost of his ability.
I still remember the first Jazz Night we attended, shortly after Dave became Clarks student. Mr. Bondy respectfully gave each student the chance, and expected them to, improvise. He treated them each as part of the band. Recently I had the opportunity to attend one of my sons Davids performances, and while listening to the solos and interplays between the musicians, I couldn't help but think of that night many years ago! Dave has had his own sax students over the last couple of years, and when planning his work with the young people, the first thing he looked for in his music materials was Clarks old practice agendas. What better compliment could there be than imitation! Thanks for it all.

"I first met Clark when I joined the Whiskey Hill Jazz Club in the 7th grade. From the very first rehearsal I realized Clark was the most fun, energetic, and talented music teacher I had ever been taught by.
I stayed with the group until I graduated high school in 2004 and every year I was amazed at Clark's ability to analyze the strengths and weaknesses of our ever-changing big band and develop a great program around it. Our band also had far more soloists than any band we competed against year after year due to Clarks emphasis on soloing and his belief that all student musicians are capable of improvising great jazz solos.
As an 8th grader I began to take private lessons from Clark. Every achievement for me and saxophone I attribute to Clark and his teachings. His lessons were fun and extremely educational. He was always pushing my to get to a higher place with my music. I would not hesitate for a second to recommend Clark as a saxophone teacher to ANYONE, regardless of age or skill level. Here are a few of my accomplishments while under Clarks tutelage:

Attending a national week long Jazz Clinic and finding out that you know what you are doing: Priceless
Last July I had the opportunity to attend Jamey Abersold's Summer Jazz Clinic in Kentucky. I had decided to learn to play the saxophone as an adult, so I can't say I had any school band experience to fall back on. I was nervous and unsure of how I would do at such an event. All I had to draw from was my lesson and recital experience, with the occasional performance at church. It was during the first day of the clinic that I discovered just how well educated I have been by Clark. Not only was I familiar with the theory terms, the written music, the scales, the chords, everything I needed to perform to the best of my ability, but I was surprised to discover how many of my fellow students were afraid to get up on the stage and perform. Me? I've played with enough professional musicians, thanks to Clark's recitals, that I was more excited at the opportunity to play with Rufus Reid than suffering from stage fright. I had hoped that going to the clinic would make me a better musician. But I learned that there really is no magic dust, and I was already in the process of accumulating all the tools I need to be a great musician. I’m convinced that it is rare to find a teacher who can perform at the high level that Clark does and is also able to teach others how to do the same. I had to travel 2300 miles to discover that I already took private lessons with the teacher whom I have seen perform, with excellence, what he was teaching to me, but was also dedicated to instructing me in every aspect of playing the saxophone - from vibrato to stage presence, sacred tunes to jazz improv, personal discipline and integrity to success. And teaching me vibrato? That has taken a special form of commitment and dedication
Professional recommendation:
When it comes to hiring professional musicians, they don't come any better than Clark H. Bondy! I have had the opportunity to see Clark perform in many different settings and he inspires confidence in his abilities in every one of them. He can direct a small school band delighting not only band parents, but also the casual observer. He can perform with The Shanghai Woolies with a raw and gritty sound inspiring the audience to dance. He can perform at a Christmas Eve Candlelight Service with a smooth, rich tone that appeals to every member of the audience. I?ve booked Clark to play at church services where he performed special music that included visual multi-media and a wedding reception where he put together a complete band and a set list that included favorites of the bride and groom. I would recommend Clark with complete confidence in any music setting: teaching or performing. Music is Clark's job, and it's great fun to watch him work.

Alex has studied the alto and tenor saxophone under Mr. Bondy since 1999 as a student from Damascus Christian School and as a private student. He has also enjoyed and participated in the WHJC middle school band for the past 3 years. During the past year he was able to participate in WIBC, a high school honor band concert, and has won various outstanding soloists awards with the WHJC band. Alex has scored well at the annual middle school solo fests and received a 1- this year as a freshman in the solo competition.
Alex parents recommendation:
Mr. Bondy has been the most influential teacher in our sons life, and has encouraged Alex to have a deep love for music. We appreciate the mentoring relationship that Mr. Bondy establishes with his students, which includes a superior knowledge of saxophone playing fundamentals, but also goes beyond the mechanics of music to impart discipline and character in his students lives. Weve noticed that over the years, many high school students begin to lose interest in playing a musical instrument, but due to Mr. Bs creativity and the ever explanding challenges that he offers, our son has continued to improve in his musical abilities and increase in his interest for music. It has been a privilege for Alex to study under Mr. Bondy these past years.
Alex’s recommendation:
Mr. Bondy has been my only saxophone teacher since 4th grade, and everything Ive achieved and participated in, is because of his teaching. Mr. B. has a hilarious sense of humor and is fun to work with. His knowledge and music skills are outstanding; Im privileged to be able to study under him.
Upon Graduation:
Thank you for giving me the joy of music. You have played such a big role in my life. I am blessed to have studied under you for all these years and I have learned lessons from you beyond that of the saxophone.

I took lessons from Clark Bondy from 1991 to 1996. Clark
was an amazing musical mentor for me. His commitment to me as a
person and as a musician was evident in many ways.
He is patient. I don't remember him ever getting mad at me
for not practicing or not doing something correctly. What i do
remember is his consistent presence in holding out what i was
doing well and how i could improve. This worked well for me.
Clark is very organized. He kept his own records of what i
was working on each week and how much I was practicing. He put
together large recitals each year for his students. These
things helped me to focus on practicing and growing as a
musician.
Clark is a very talented and knowledgable saxophonist. I
learned a lot from hearing him play, at shows and during our
lessons. His insights into ways to improve my playing were
quite helpful.
I think the thing I liked most about taking lessons from
Clark was knowing that he was there as a guide and a sounding
board to help me explore music. I looked forward to my lessons
with him. They were definitely one of the highlights of my life
during those six years.

Our son, Gideon, has been taking lessons from Clark Bondy for five years. Gideon has positively anticipated each week going to these lessons. He has excelled in his abilities in the saxophone due to a number of things in regards to Clark Bondy's teachings. Mr. Bondy is very methodical in his practice techniques and expects the student to conform to these techniques diligently. It appears that he believes the student needs to get their passion from within, and succeeds in teaching them the self-motivation that is required of them to excel. One of the highlights of being a student of his, is his end of the term recital. They are "top-notch"! He has been very creative and has given the students not only a wonderful educational experience but a memorable one also. We have been enriched as a family these last 5 years because of his knowledge and dedication to music and the student!

I've heard so many positive comments about your program last night. Having the kids with you was a real plus. I was amazed at how good they were.
Among the quotes I have from people about last night: "They were so good--we've got to have them back again!" "Clark was so good and his use of the kids was so well done and they were good too."
It's rare to have a program where I don't feel that something could have been done better. Your relationship with the kids showed such respect, both on your part and in their feelings toward you. Obviously you took the make-up of the audience into consideration when planning the program. People loved hearing songs that they recognized from their growing up years. Several people asked me where I found such great talent. Obviously we will be booking you to return next year!

Mr. Bondy, your concerts and recitals are the best I've ever been to (I've been going for 12 years for instrumental for 3 different students - 20 "man-years"). So much fun, so entertaining and all inclusive of the students. Great job, sir.
That Whiskey Hill Band is amazing. Really? An hour & half a week? Wish I played. Maybe I'm a bit old, though. How to kids get the privilege of playing with them? You piqued David's interest last night with the mini-concert.
Last night was a tear-jerker, too. Damascus Christian will really miss you. Does your retirement from DCS affect Phonics Phactory and your private students? I can't imagine how we'd ever find a teacher nearly comparable to you. The Lord just brought you - Mr. Saxophone with a wit - a dropped you right in front of us. We're thankful!

I hope everything is going good with your performances lessons and whiskey hill. I think I have finally adapted to college life here at Oregon State. I enjoy my classes and am doing fine academically so far. But im sure you will be much more interested in what i have been up to with my saxophone playing down here. A few weeks ago I auditioned for the Symphonic Wind Ensemble here on campus. I auditoned with the WIBC audition that you helped me with so many times and i played it better in my audition than I think I ever have before. Well long story short I got 1st alto and it has been amazing. The overall musicianship in the band is very high, the parts we are playing are extremely challenging. I play lead and there is a senior music education major that is playing the second alto part. We have an awesome bari player also. I miss my lessons with you and The Whiskey Hill Jazz Club. Thanks for everything you taught me, I know i wouldnt be where I am now without all that you taught me.

Mr. Bondy,
Just wanted to let you know that Ryan had a "awesome" time yesterday. He said it was the second best day of his life!!! The best day was the day he got his first video game!!
I am not sure what it was yesterday but he was so encouraged when he came home!
Thank for all you do for Ryan,

I highly recommend Clark Bondy as a great saxophone teacher. He teaches the fundmentals, makes it fun, and is a good role model. His love for jazz music will spread to your student and the entire family. Clark's leadership in Whiskey Hill Jazz Club is also excellent and participation in Whiskey HIll is an opportunity that should not be missed.
